It’s that time of year to nominate your business for the annual Business of the Year Awards!  This is a great way to recognize members who have strong business accomplishments, as well as a commitment to the community.  And, it’s a free opportunity for additional exposure for your company. Businesses with 19 employees and fewer compete in the “small/medium” category, and businesses with twenty or more employees compete in the “large” category.  Nominations are also open to not-for-profit

Organizations.  Award criteria include showing your business accomplishments and strengths in this economic climate, growth in workforce and/or company sales/revenue/profit, as well as activities that illustrate a commitment to the community.  Non-profit groups are asked to highlight their history, structure and priorities for the community.  Past recipients review the nominations and select the winners.   The application deadline is August 15.  The awards will be presented at the Chamber’s Annual Meeting luncheon on September 29.  Applications are in the newsroom on our website and in both offices.  Please call if you have any questions.

This is the last week for the Shoes for Kids project.  Please drop off a pair(s) of new sneakers for students in the Charlotte County schools.  You can also make a donation and let the Kiwanis members do the shopping Charlotte for you.  Visit www.shoesforkidsproject.org.

The anti-discrimination provision of the U.S. Immigration Reform and Control Act prohibits discrimination against job applicants because they are not U.S. citizens.  So, you might want to eliminate any question on "citizenship" from your job application ... and, instead, simply ask if an applicant is "legally-qualified to work in the United States".  The most appropriate and legally-safest means to determine an applicant's citizenship status is via the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service's Form I-9.  For the best background screening ... contact Doris Hebert-Ferrigno at NRG Background Checks!  941-488-8500;  800-531-6522;  nrginfo@atlantic.net

Just For Fun

YOU KNOW YOU'RE IN FLORIDA IN JULY WHEN. . . .

The best parking place is determined by shade instead of distance.

Hot water now comes out of both taps.

You can make sun tea instantly.

You learn that a seat belt buckle makes a pretty good branding iron!

The temperature drops below 95 and you feel a little chilly.

You discover that in July it only takes 2 fingers to steer your car.

You discover that you can get sunburned through your car window.

You break into a sweat the instant you step outside at 7:30 am.

Your biggest bicycle wreck fear is, "What if I get knocked out and end
up lying on the pavement and cook to death?"

You realize that asphalt has a liquid state.

Do you have exciting information about YOUR business?  Send it to the Chamber and we'll share it with our other members! Email news about your business to Julie Mathis at jmathis@charlottecountychamber.org.  Please keep it to 90 words or fewer. We reserve the right to publish as well as edit any posting. BOL goes out weekly on Mondays; please email your news by the preceding Friday.

Networking at Noon is today at the Nav-A-Gator Grille at DeSoto Marina in Lake Suzy.  Please call the Port Charlotte office at 627-2222 so you can select your food choice.

Next Wed. is the  Third Wednesday Coffee and we will feature past president, Mark Martella,  who  will discuss “The Three Biggest Mistakes Small Businesses Make When Trying to Grow Third Business and How to Fix Them.”  Please join us from 7:15 to 8:30 a.m. at the Event Center in Punta Gorda for learning and networking.   And, bring a business card for a drawing for a complimentary insert in the Chamber’s newsletter.

Applications for the Leadership Charlotte class of 2018 are due in our Port Charlotte office at 4 p.m. on July 27.  For those of you who skim this column, Leadership Charlotte is a signature program of the Chamber.  For the past 29 years, class members have spent a day together in cars and busses learning about our community.  They have waded in the Peace River, viewed a surgery, toured the air traffic control tower and so, so much more.  It’s like summer camp for adults.  Plus, they have made life-long friendships and raised more than a half a million dollars for local non-profits.  As you can read, I’m pretty proud of Leadership Charlotte.  Check out the application and schedule on our website or stop in and we’ll get you a copy.  It’s a blind and competitive application process, so don’t wait until the last week to answer the “toot your own horn” questions.

We’ll welcome the new Charlotte County Teachers at a breakfast on Aug. 2 at 7:45 a.m. at the Event Center.  Sign up to sponsor a teacher for $35. And tell them all about the community and your business over breakfast.  We will be putting together goodie bags for the teachers and sponsors can include a promotional item in the welcome bags.   Please drop off 50 items by July 26 to our Port Charlotte office.

Our Port Charlotte office is a collection site for the Shoes for Kids project.  Please drop off a pair(s) of new sneakers for students in the Charlotte County schools.  You can also make a donation and let the Kiwanis members do the shopping Charlotte for you.  Visit www.shoesforkidsproject.org.

Happy first day of school to students in the year-round schools.  Have a successful, fun year!

Just For Fun

A wealthy woman is giving a garden party, and several well-to-do guests attend. While the party ensues, two gardeners are out on the back lawn working. One guest was watching the gardeners do their thing, and while one gardener was busy weeding, the other jumped up and did graceful swirling dance movements.

Taken by his grace, the guest remarked to the host, "That man is such a talented dancer, that I would pay him a hundred dollars to demonstrate his dancing before my aerobics class!"

When the host asked the first gardener about such an arrangement, he yelled, "Hey Fred! Do you think for a hundred dollars you could step on that rake again?"

How many phone savvy techs does it take to teach you how to use your new iPhone?

None.

It only takes a teenager.

We had just finished tucking our five kids into bed when three-year-old Billy began to wail. Turns out, he had accidentally swallowed a penny and was sure he was going to die.

Desperate to calm him, my husband palmed a penny that he had in his pocket and pretended to pull it from Billy’s ear.

Billy was delighted. In a flash, he snatched it from my husband’s hand, swallowed it, and demanded, “Do it again!”

Charlotte Sun Column - June 28, 2017

While I was on a mini-family reunion (13 women in one house with everyone on their A game), I missed the graduation of the Leadership Charlotte class of 2017.  Congratulations to the graduates: Kim Amontree, Charlotte County School Board; Faezeh Andrews, Charlotte County 211; Marjorie Benson, Friendly Floors; Justin Brand, Charlotte Harbor Event & Conference Center; Jessica Burrows, Village Place; Michael Casarella, Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office; Phil Fernandez, Charlotte Sun; Brad Gamblin, Punta Gorda Rotary Foundation; Bill Hawley, Fawcett Memorial Hospital; Bevin Holzschuk, Bayfront Health Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda; Nancy Johnson, TEAM Punta Gorda; Steve Lineberry, Wise Choice Photography & Video; Toby Lynn, The Mortgage Firm; Bob Massey, Florida Weekly; Lindsey McKelvy, Panther Hollow Dental Lodge; Sheila Meeks, Michael Saunders & Company; Jen Molnar, City of Punta Gorda Fire Department; Josh Moye, Charlotte County Attorney’s Office; Tom Parker, Young Life; Joy Price; Brett Sifrit, The Farr Law Firm; John Westlake, Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office and John Willis, Charlotte Correctional Institute. And of course, Bob White, Charlotte County Chamber of Commerce, and Ceres Austria, Charlotte County Attorney’s Office, chair and co-chair.  Applications for the class of 2018 are available in both offices and on our website.  The blind process is very competitive, so make sure you take time to answer the nine questions (toot your own horn).  You must be able to commit to attending the Oct. 20 Simulated Society exercise, as well as the days on the second Thursday of the month.  Ask any alumni, it’s well worth the time out of the office.

Joe Paterno, director of the Southwest Florida Workforce Development Board/Career Source, spoke at our Coffee last week and discussed, among other things, Destination Graduation.  He emailed that he forgot to mention that the successful program is also at Charlotte and Port Charlotte High schools (in case you’d like to volunteer with the kids).  Check out all the programs offered by Career Source for entry, re-entry, managerial and professional positions, training, internships and so much more at  www.careersourcesouthwestflorida.com.

And fyi, the July 4th Freedom Swim across the harbor begins at 11 a.m. and the fireworks are on July 4 when it’s dark.  Have a safe, fun day.

Businesses owe it to themselves and everyone their employees come in contact with to know everything they can about their workers.  Thorough background checks accomplish this.  However, some businesses rationalize not checking because of cost.  But the cost of a background check is a tiny fraction of the costs of terminating an employee and re-recruiting, re-hiring, and re-training a replacement ... and/or defending a lawsuit brought by a victim of a dishonest or violent employee.  For the best employment screening ... contact Doris Hebert-Ferrigno at NRG Background Checks!  941-488-8500;  800-531-6522;  nrginfo@atlantic.net

The company where I work provides four-foot-high cubicles so each employee can have some privacy.

One day a co-worker had an exasperating phone conversation with one of her teenage sons. After hanging up, she heaved a sigh and said, "No one ever listens to me."

Immediately, several voices from surrounding cubicles called out, "Yes, yes we do."

My Dad bought my Mom a piano for her birthday. A few weeks later, I asked how she was doing with it.

"Oh," said My Dad, "I persuaded her to switch to a clarinet."

"How come?" I asked.

"Well," he answered, "because with a clarinet, she can't sing."

Charlotte Sun Column - June 14, 2017

Networking at Noon is today at Firehouse Subs (18500 Veterans Blvd., Port Charlotte).  Please RSVP by calling our Port Charlotte office (627-2222).

Leadership Charlotte graduation is Fri. at 6 p.m. at Kingsway Country Club.  Please RSVP by calling our Port Charlotte office or visit the Chamber store.  Funny story...sort of.  The LC class of 1997 decided to dress for graduation in gowns and black-tie, and they didn’t tell anyone.  So, when other guests arrived in less formal, more June-like summer attire and saw class members dressed to the nines, many yelled at their significant other (why didn’t you tell me it was a formal event), got in the car and went home or to a local hang out.  We didn’t have a big crowd that night, but the class looked terrific (#hatesurprises).

Joe Paterno, director of the Southwest Florida Workforce Development Board/Career Source, is the featured speaker at our Third Wednesday Coffee, June 21.

Paterno will be talking about workforce related issues, services available to employers and residents, including youth programs.  The Coffee is sponsored by Harborside El Jobean Beach & Yacht Club.  Please join us from 7:15 to 8:30 a.m. at the Event Center for great information and networking.

The Business Card Exchange is June 22 at Royal Palm Retirement Centre.  Bring plenty of business cards and a small gift to gain additional name and face recognition.

Would you like to increase the visibility of your business?  Become a Sustaining Partner and see your business logo and hear your business’ name at our activities throughout the community, as well as in our publications and more.  Details are available online or by calling Bob White at 627-2222.

So, readers who are at home enjoying a second cup of coffee or those of you who have a few hours to spare after work or on a weekend, Charlotte County needs your help.  Many, many volunteers who serve the community have headed up north for the summer, but the residents who need services are still here.  Meals on Wheels needs drivers, students at Cooper Street need reading buddies, the list goes on and on.  If you can help, please call the United Way at 627-3539 for a list of volunteer opportunities or contact your favorite non-profit directly.  There is so much to do in our community.  Please be a doer!
