We had so much fun at our 91st Annual Meeting Luncheon on Friday.  With such a large crowd, it was hard to get around to say hello to everyone, but we’ve received great feedback on new lunch meeting format, great food and service from the Event Center staff, heartfelt speeches and more.  Congratulations to everyone who was nominated for the Business of the Year awards and to those who took home a plaque:

Fawcett Memorial Hospital, large Business of the Year; State Insurance Agency, Brian Chapman, Jr., medium; Harborwalk Scoops and Bites, small and Boys and Girls Clubs of Charlotte County, the non-profit.  Peter Keating, Small Business Development Center at Florida Gulf Coast University, was named Ambassador of the Year.  Mary Ann Mize, Charlotte State Bank & Trust, was selected as the Pacesetter, and you should have seen the look of surprise and happiness on her face.  In honor of Wendy Atkinson’s birthday, there was a small bidding war for the beautiful centerpieces from Port Charlotte Florist and the winners are the young men at AMIKids Crossroads who received more than $550, thanks to our generous members.  Our thanks to everyone who helped to make the event a success.  We’ve decided to do it again on September 29, 2017, so plan to join us and take the afternoon off.

According to the Florida Chamber, this is Employee Voter Registration Week. Take time this week to encourage your employees to visit the free, non-partisan website, FloridaWins.org. Once there, they can click on the “Register to Vote” icon on the homepage and enter their zip code to complete their county’s voter registration process or visit www.charlottevotes.comYou, your employees, friends and family members cannot vote in the 2016 Florida General Election if they are not registered by Tuesday, October 11.  Early voting starts October 24.

The Charlotte County Board of County Commissioner’s Information & Referral (I&R) Service, known as Charlotte 2-1-1, is among a select group of organizations to be accredited by the Alliance of Information and Referral Systems (AIRS). Charlotte Sun Column - September 21, 2016

Our Third Wednesday Coffee is this morning with the United Way of Charlotte County kicking off their annual campaign.  In addition to great networking, there will be cheerleaders, prizes and more.  Please join us!

The Sept. 29 Business Card Exchange will be held at Busey Bank’s Port Charlotte office, 1490 Tamiami Trail, starting at 5 p.m.  Please bring plenty of cards to hand out and a small gift to gain some additional name and face recognition.

So, the place care are waiting to be printed, the centerpieces ordered, the awards are proofed and the agenda for Friday’s 91st Annual Meeting is being tweaked.  We are really excited about this first-ever luncheon where we will recognize the great work that is being done in our community.  Congratulations to the Business of the Year nominees:

Boys and Girls Club of Charlotte County; Centennial Bank; Harborwalk Scoops & Bites; Granny Nannies; Fawcett Memorial Hospital; Presley Beane Financial Services; Publix; Springs at South Biscayne; State Insurance Agency, Brian Chapman, Jr. and Suncoast One Title & Closings, Inc.  And the recipients are….oh, you’ll have to wait until Friday.  We will be thanking outgoing Board members, Wendy Atkinson, AMI Kids Crossroads;

Angela Hogan, Charlotte County Homeless Coalition; Carlton Hughes, Green Coast Homes & Contracting; Natalie Lashway,  Farr Law Firm; David Lebron, Fawcett Memorial Hospital and Gary Quill, Charlotte County Airport Authority and welcoming new Board member, Carrie Blackwell Hussey, United Way of Charlotte County.

I want to give a special shout out Wendy Atkinson, chamber past president, and a soon to be member of the Charlotte County School Board.  Following her experience with Leadership Charlotte, Wendy became more involved with the Chamber and her enthusiasm for all things Leadership and Chamber was contagious.  As president, she developed a partnership with the Charlotte Technical College that continues today.  The good news for me (and all of us) is that Wendy will still be involved in the community and we’ll see her smiling face as she continues to advocate for kids.

Outgoing president, Jason Lucas, the Lucas Law Firm, PA, told me that he’s had so much fun as president that he’d do it again.  Once in a while this past year, I’d get a text from him that one of his clients was arrested and he’d miss a meeting, but our motto is work always comes first.  His love of baseball helped us enhance our partnership with the Rays and Stone Crabs and his love of his family is evident when we see his wife and children at Chamber events.  We are fortunate that he will continue to serve on the Board and chair our Government Affairs Committee.

Our Chamber has a great team.  Thank you all for your service to our community!

In avoiding discrimination in hiring, ignorance is often bliss.  When employers gather information about job applicants using Google and websites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc., they expose themselves to discriminatory "failure-to-hire" lawsuits.  Normally, employers would never ask applicants about age, race, national origin, religion, disability, etc., but viewing an applicant's Facebook page may provide much of that information ... and more.  By accessing such information online, the employer loses the ability to claim ignorance.  For FCRA-compliant employment and tenancy screening, contact Doris Hebert-Ferrigno at NRG Background Checks.  941-488-8500;  800-531-6522;  nrginfo@atlantic.net

Car maintenance secret:  Don’t let your fuel dip below 1/4 tank.  This is because fuel pumps and fuel tanks are now a single part.  When gas dips below a quarter tank, the exposed pump loses the cooling blanket of the gas.  Summer heat stresses the heat pump, and you can end up on the side of the road, later paying $500-900 for the repair.  So make it a priority to fill up your tank.  At Complete Auto Repair, we want to earn your business! Call 941-623-2926 to schedule an appointment.

The Homeless Coalition Foundation is the proud recipient from the Punta Gorda’s Old Timers Club of a donation of $5000. This donation was raised through their annual Old Timers luncheon in which they donate proceeds to community organizations.  This generous donation to the Foundation supports The Homeless Coalition’s programs and services.  As our organization grows this allows the homeless Coalition to serve those in need through programs like: Safe Emergency Shelter, Hot Meals, Homeless Prevention and education through the ‘Bridges Out of Poverty’ curriculum.

Just For Fun

A farmer and his recently hired hand were eating an early breakfast of biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, bacon and coffee that the farmer's wife had prepared for them. Thinking of all the work they had to get done that day, the farmer told the hired man he might as well go ahead and eat his lunch too.

The hired man didn't say a word, but filled his plate a second time and proceeded to eat. After a while the farmer said, "We've got so much work to do today, you might as well eat your supper now too."

Again, the hired man didn't respond but refilled his plate a third time and continued to eat. Finally, after eating his third plate of food, the hired man pushed back his chair and began to take off his shoes.

"What are you doing"? the farmer asked.

The hired man replied, "I don't work after supper."

Charlotte Sun Column - September 14, 2016

Riverwood Golf Club is hosting Networking at Noon today.  Please don’t just “walk-in” because seating is limited.  Check with the Port Charlotte office (627-2222) to make sure there’s a seat for you.

The Leadership Charlotte class of 2017 will be introduced at a reception, graciously hosted by South Port Square, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. tomorrow.  All alumni are encouraged to join us for an always-fun evening.

Our Third Wednesday Coffee on Sept. 21 will feature the United Way of Charlotte County.  Please join us from 7:15 to 8:30 a.m. at the Event Center in Punta Gorda.

The Sept. 29 Business Card Exchange will be held at Busey Bank’s Port Charlotte office, 1490 Tamiami Trail, starting at 5 p.m.  Please bring plenty of cards to hand out and a small gift to gain some additional name and face recognition.

We’re really excited about our 91 years as a Chamber celebration on Sept. 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Event Center in Punta Gorda.  This is the first time we’ve done a luncheon meeting and I’m psyched that we have so many members and guests attending.  There is always a fear (at least in my world) about changing things up, so I’m pleased to see names on the list that I didn’t see when it was held in the evening.  We will be recognizing all the nominees for Business of the Year, the Ambassador of the Year and the Pacesetter.  It will be a fun afternoon of celebrating our accomplishments and I hope you’ll join us!

Just a reminder that season is approaching and we need your brochures in both offices so that when visitors and residents stop in, they can pick up information about your business.  Trust me, people walk out with the Community Guide, the Business Directory and a handful of information.  Our guests also like maps; they like paper!  So, if you’re not in our Business Directory that will go to the printer in October, now’s the time to join the Chamber.  Please contact Bob White, our director of business development, and see how your business can benefit from being a member of a soon to be 91 year old organization.  Please come celebrate with us next week!

Joan invited some people to dinner. At the table, she turned to her six-year-old daughter and said, "Would you like to say the blessing?"

"I wouldn't know what to say," the girl replied.

"Just say what you hear Mommy say," Joan answered.

The girl thought for a minute, then bowed her head and said, "Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner?"

One day my housework-challenged husband decided to wash his sweatshirt.

Seconds after he stepped into the laundry room, he shouted to me, "What setting do I use on the washing machine?"

"It depends," I replied. "What does it say on your shirt?"

He yelled back, "Just do it!"

A man told his doctor that he wasn't able to do all the things around the house that he used to do.

When the examination was complete, he said, "Now, Doc, I can take it. Tell me in plain English what is wrong with me."

"Well, in plain English," the doctor replied, "you're just lazy."

"Okay," said the man. "Now give me the medical term so I can tell my wife."

Just For Fun

A neighbor asked his friend, who was celebrating 50 years of marriage, what the secret was to a long and happy marriage?

His friend replied, "When we were first married, we vowed to go out twice a week no matter how little money we had and we have done so for 50 years."

"Twice a week, you say?"

"Yeah. She goes out on Tuesday and I go out on Friday."

------------------

The other day, Nancy and I got into some petty argument. (I say it was petty. She would have said it was Armageddon.) As is our nature, neither of us would admit the possibility that we might be in error.

To her credit, Nancy finally said, "Look. I'll tell you what. I'll admit I'm wrong if you admit I was right."

"Fine." I said.

She took a deep breath, looked me in the eye and said, "I'm wrong."

I grinned and replied, "You're right."
