Charlotte Sun Column - September 20, 2017

The Third Wednesday Coffee is this morning.  Please join us from 7:15 to 8:30 a.m. at the Event Center.  The United Way of Charlotte County is the sponsor and the program.  In addition to wonderful United Way volunteers, there will be many people there who are volunteering for Days of Caring projects.  I know some businesses had to take a step back on the Caring projects, but when things calm down, they’ll be back at it.  Thank you everyone.

The location of the Business Card Exchange on Sept. 28 has been changed to the Charlotte Sun’s office on Harborview.  Thank you Charlotte Sun staff for stepping up.  The original site, Kings Gate, housed nursing home residents and National Guard members during Irma, so they aren’t quite ready for a party at their place.  We’ll be back there in the new year.

We’re adding names to the list of attendees at our Sept. 29 Annual Meeting Luncheon.  Make sure your name is on the list for a great hour plus of networking and thanking and acknowledging.  Business of the Year nominees will be recognized and the Pacesetter award will be handed out, too.

Charlotte Sun Column - September 13, 2017

Well, this is certainly a different column than I planned to write.  I hope everyone is safe.  That’s all we can ask for right now.  Our office in Port Charlotte is open and we have Business Directories that you can pick up with a listing of all our members who are licensed to take care of your product and service needs.  For those with internet, please visit our website (www.charlottecountychamber.org) and that of the Charlotte DeSoto Building Industry Association, www.cdbia.com.  Make sure you use a licensed, insured contractor for any work done on your business or personal property.  Unfortunately, when disasters happen, scam artists can’t wait to take advantage of people.  Don’t give “up front” money.  Ask for their business tax license, a copy of their liability insurance and a reference.  If you’re unsure about what to do, pause, and ask a neighbor or friend for advice.

Networking at Noon has been postponed.  We will reschedule with the Four Points by Sheraton Punta Gorda.  Ribbon cuttings for this week have been postponed.

The introduction of the Leadership Charlotte class of 2018 will be next week on Sept. 21 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Event Center.  Our Past Presidents’ luncheon, scheduled for Friday, has been postponed.

We’re on track for the Third Wednesday Coffee on Sept. 20.  Please join us from 7:15 to 8:30 a.m. at the Event Center.  It will be so nice to see everyone after all of this, so please plan to attend.  The Business Card Exchange is Sept. 28 at Kings Gate Golf Club on Rampart Blvd.

We’ve extended the deadline for applications for the Junior Leadership Charlotte class of 2018 to 4 p.m. on Tues., Sept. 19.  Please get your application to our Port Charlotte office by the new deadline.

I understand that 211, the local referral and social services hot line, really could use people to help answer the phone and field calls.  If you have a few hours to spare, please call 211 and offer your assistance.

As I’m writing this, we don’t have internet or phones.  Please check our facebook page for updates and information.

     Stay safe.

Charlotte Sun Column - September 6, 2017

Grab your September calendar and add some great networking events, starting with Networking at Noon on Sept. 13 at the Four Points by Sheraton Punt Gorda.  Please make a reservation so the chef can be prepared.  You can do that in the Chamber store or by calling 627-2222.  The Third Wednesday Coffee on Sept. 20 will feature the United Way of Charlotte County.  It’s also the kick off to their Day of Caring, so the Event Center will be a hub for volunteer activity.  Please join us from 7:15 to 8:30 a.m.

The Business Card Exchange is Sept. 28 at Kings Gate Golf Club on Rampart Blvd.  Remember to bring a small gift to promote your business and plenty of business cards to hand out to potential clients and referral sources.

Our 92nd annual meeting will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 29 at the Event Center.  Please join us as we celebrate our accomplishments and thank those who helped make them happen.  Even though the gathering isn’t at night, we encourage you to bring your significant other and then spend the afternoon shopping downtown. And, since it is at noon, bring your staff and introduced them to members of the business community.  We had great feedback last year about the luncheon and we know that this year will be as much fun.  Please make a reservation and join us as we celebrate this wonderful chamber and our community.

Leadership Charlotte alumni, plan to attend the introduction of the Leadership Charlotte class of 2018 on Sept. 14 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Event Center.  I’m pretty sure someone will show up at South Port Square, but they are undergoing renovations in the Town Hall and can’t host us this year.  So head downtown and meet the class of 2018.  Please call the Port Charlotte office so we can get a head count.

Applications for the Junior Leadership Charlotte class of 2018 are due on Mon., Sept. 11 by 4 p.m. in the Port Charlotte office.  Applications are available in the high school guidance office, the newsroom on the Chamber’s website and in both offices.

Last call from the Charlotte County Young Professionals to nominate a young professional for The Four Under 40 Award which honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the business community.   For more information about any of these programs, please call us at 627-2222 or visit www.charlottecountychamber.org.

So, I hope everyone has taken out their disaster plan, reviewed it with staff and is getting prepared, just in case.  If you don’t have a plan, call us and we’ll share ours.

Be prepared and stay safe.

Just For Fun

A woman with a minor injury was at the hospital because her doctor said she wanted to take a closer look at it to make sure everything was all right.

The woman's husband sits patiently in the waiting room.

After a few minutes, the doctor comes out and asks her assistant for a wrench, which understandably concerns the husband.

Then, after a couple more moments, the doctor re-enters the room, this time asking for a screwdriver. The husband grows worried and begins to pace in circles. Then, a little later, the doctor bursts through the doors screaming for a hammer and at that, the husband, in a state of frenzied fear, runs up and asks, "Doctor, what the heck is wrong with my wife?"

"I don't know," replies the flustered doctor, "I can't get my bag open!"
