Charlotte Sun Column - August 24, 2016

The Sunset Grill on the Harbor (formerly Portofino’s) is hosting the Business Card Exchange tomorrow.  Please join us from 5 to 7 p.m. for great networking.  Bring a small gift for additional name and face recognition, and stay for dinner after the event.

Our annual Board Retreat is Friday.  Please send me (or any Board member) an email if you have any suggestions on ways we can improve our organization and benefit your business.

Our annual Past Presidents’ luncheon is Sept. 8.   It’s a great way to re-connect with some great community leaders and to share ideas with the team that’s coming in.  More on the new team in a future column.

Applications for the Junior Leadership Charlotte class of 2017 are in the guidance offices at all the high schools, in the newsroom on our website and in both offices.  This is a nine month program for high school juniors that will introduce them to a variety of careers, people and places, as well as have them interact with students from the “other” schools.  Thanks to the support of the business community and the annual JLC Golf Tournament, this program is free to those who are selected.  It’s a competitive process, so adults, make sure your student put some time into completing the application.

The Leadership Charlotte class of 2017 will be introduced at a reception, graciously hosted by South Port Square, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Sept. 15.  All alumni are encouraged to join us for an always-fun evening.

We’ve received positive feedback about our Annual Meeting Luncheon on Sept. 23.  We’ve always had an evening event, but for a number of reasons, we decided to try a luncheon this year.  We will still recognize the Business of the Year award winners and the Pacesetter of the Year, thank outgoing Board members and welcome the new team.  We will be celebrating our 91st year and applauding businesses and individuals who have done so much this past year for our Chamber.  We want to encourage you to bring your staff and significant others to learn more about what a great business community we have.  Please join us!

Just For Fun

When Diane found out she was pregnant, she told the good news to anyone who would listen. Her 4-year-old son overheard some of his parents private conversations.

One day, when Diane and her 4-year-old were shopping, a woman asked the little boy if he was excited about the new baby.

"Yes!" the 4-year-old said, "and I know what we are going to name it, too.  If it's a girl we're going to call her Christina, and if it's another boy we're going to call it quits!"

My wife has been stressing the importance of punctuality to me recently. I made a point of picking her up early at the bridge club for the first time today.

You should have seen the shocked looks of the faces of the ladies when they found out I’m alive. Apparently my wife has been referring to me as her late husband.

Charlotte Sun Column - August 17, 2016

This morning at the Third Wednesday Coffee we’ll be practicing our elevator speech as we speed network and introduce ourselves to fellow Chamber members.  Bring plenty of business cards to hand out to potential customers and new referral sources. Our thanks to State Insurance Agency, Brian Chapman Agency for sponsoring the Coffee.   The Leadership Charlotte class of 2016 will be on hand to distribute the funds from their very successful fund raiser held in June to AMIKids Crossroads, Golisano Children’s Hospital Pediatric Specialty Clinic, New Operation Cooper Street and the Leadership Charlotte Endowment Fund at the Charlotte Community Foundation.  The class also donated money to the Chamber’s Junior Leadership Charlotte program.

And, writing of the 23 year-old JLC program, this is a great opportunity for 28 high school juniors, aimed to enhance their educational experiences and knowledge about our community.  The goal is that they will return to Charlotte County after their post-secondary education to live, work and play.  Students who wish to be considered for JLC should complete the application, including answering the questions listed on the back.  Students accepted into JLC must be able to attend all of the sessions noted on the application.  Applications are due by 4pm on Monday, September 12, and are available in guidance offices at the high school, in both Chamber offices and in the newsroom on our website.

A boy was assigned a paper on childbirth and asked his parents, "How was I born?"

"Well, Honey..." said the boy's mom, "the stork brought you to us."

"Oh," said the boy. "Well, how did you and daddy get born?" he asked.

"Oh, the stork brought us too," chimed in the dad.

"Well how were grandpa and grandma born?" he persisted.

"Well darling, the stork brought them too!" said the mom, by now starting to squirm a little.

Several days later, the boy handed in his paper to the teacher who read with confusion the opening sentence: "This report has been very difficult to write because there hasn't been a natural childbirth in my family for three generations."

Just For Fun

My mother-in-law sent me two sweaters for Christmas.

When she came for a visit, I put on one of the sweaters.

The first thing she said was, "What's the matter? Didn't you like the other one?"

________________________________________

I took four tires to a friend's garage sale and was asking $35 apiece. I needed to step away for a bit so I asked him to watch them for me.

"Sure," he said, "but just in case someone offers less, how low are you willing to go?"

"Try for more, but I will accept $20 each," I said, and left.

When I returned, my tires were gone. "How much did you get for them?" I asked excitedly.

"Twenty dollars each."

"Who bought them?"

"I did!"

Failure to perform background checks on applicants and employees could make your business vulnerable to negligent hiring or retention lawsuits brought by a co-worker, customer, or client hurt by an employee.  Court decisions have established the principle that an employer has a "duty of care" to protect workers, customers, and clients from injury caused by an unfit employee who the employer "reasonably should have known" posed a risk.  Be sure to check!  For FCRA-compliant employment and tenancy screening, contact Doris Hebert-Ferrigno at NRG Background Checks.  941-488-8500;  800-531-6522;  nrginfo@atlantic.net

Andrew “Drew” Emery has been named chief executive officer of Bayfront Health Punta Gorda, effective August 1. This is a homecoming of sorts, as Emery previously served the hospital as chief operating officer from 2010 to 2013. He has served as CEO of Shands Starke Regional Medical Center since July 2014. During his tenure in Starke, Emery recruited new physicians to the community and improved processes to serve a growing number of patients. Through recruitment of specialty and primary care physicians, patients can secure more services close to home, whether surgery or cardiovascular care.J

Just For Fun

A lawyer meets with the family of a recently deceased millionaire for the reading of the will.

"To my loving wife, Rose, who always stood by me, I leave the house and $2 million," the attorney reads.

"To my darling daughter, Jessica, who looked after me in sickness and kept the business going, I leave the yacht, the business and $1 million."

"And finally," the lawyer concludes, "to my cousin Dan, who hated me, argued with me and thought I would never mention him in my will. Well, you were wrong. Hi Dan!"

Realizing at the last minute that it was his father's birthday, a teenage boy rushed to the corner store to grab a card.

He quickly found a son-to-father card but neglected to read it carefully.

Later when his father opened his gifts, he was surprised to read aloud, "Happy birthday to a wonderful Dad. Now that I'm a father too . . ."

Charlotte Sun Column - August 3, 2016

Sorry, Julie is on Vacation and there will not be a column in the Charlotte Sun today.  Check back next week.

Charlotte Sun Column - July 27, 2016

So, as July comes to a close, grab your calendar and mark down dates in a very busy August.  We start on Tues. with the New Teachers’ Breakfast where we’ll meet the new teachers who will be joining the district.  I have fond memories of meeting teachers who literally moved to town the day before, ate a quick meal and headed out to find a place to live.  But, during that quick meal, they talked about how excited they were to get into the classroom, make it their own and meet their students.  I’ve always loved their passion.

Aug. 10 is Networking at Noon at the Village Fish Market & Restaurant in Fishermen’s Village.  Please make your reservation (and food selection) online in the Chamber store or by calling 627-2222.

On Aug. 12 we will have the 5th Annual Leadership Charlotte Hall of Fame luncheon at the Isles Yacht Club in Punta Gorda.  The Hall of Fame Award recognizes alumni who have distinguished themselves in leadership and service to Charlotte County through civic and business leadership, philanthropy and/or service to the community or the Charlotte County Chamber.  Nominees are:  Major Mike Anderson (2008), Teri Ashley (2001), Donna Barrett (2010), Bob Dickinson (2007), Bill Dryburgh (1999), Kevin Graham (2000), Tom Huff (1993), Marie LaBrosse (2011), Blair McVety (1995), Dianne Munson (1992) and Larry Sandles (1998).  Please join us as we recognize and thank all of the nominees for their contributions to our community.

Leadership Charlotte alumni will gather at 4 p.m. on Aug. 16 in the Port Charlotte office to start planning the days for the class of 2017.  We’d love to hear your ideas in person or via email.  And, if you’d like to market your business to the class, please consider sponsoring a day or portion thereof.

Our thanks to State Insurance Agency, Brian Chapman, Jr. for sponsoring the Aug. 17 Coffee and to Sunset Grill on the Harbor for hosting the Aug 25 Business Card Exchange.

Our annual Board Retreat is Aug. 26 and we would appreciate any feedback or suggestions you have about the Chamber or your membership.  Just send me an email with your thoughts.

Kudos to the gang at the Punta Gorda Airport for working to bring Frontier Airlines nonstop flights from PGD to Chicago O’Hare, Philadelphia and Trenton, New Jersey in late October. Special introductory fares are available at www.flyfrontier.com.  See you soon, Phily!

If you’re up early this morning, please join us for the Candidates’ Forum from 7:15 to 8:30 a.m. at the Event Center in Punta Gorda and meet the 27 candidates who will be attending.  If you’re not registered to vote, please do by Aug. 1.  Please visit www.charlottevotes.com for all you voting information.

The Charlotte Harbor Event & Conference Center is the host for the July 28 Business Card Exchange.
