Just For Fun

Country Hospitality

A man was on a long walk in the country. He became thirsty so decided to stop at a little cottage and ask for something to drink. The lady of the house invited him in and served him a bowl of soup by the fire.

There was a baby pig running around the kitchen, running up to the visitor and giving him a great deal of attention. The visitor commented that he had never seen a pig this friendly.

The housewife replied, "Ah, he's not that friendly. That's his bowl you're using."

Just a note of thanks to the “village” who offered advice, encouragement, a hug, a stern glance and more over the years. Kate is graduating from Florida State this weekend!  You know who you are - friends, family, teachers, colleagues.  You picked her up when I was running late and you watched her until I got home.  You spoke with her at Chamber events, Publix, church, the soccer field and when you saw her around town.  Kate tells me I’m “facey” (people know who I am), and by extension, she is, too.  You encouraged her, and me, and we are both grateful.  She is a delightful young woman and I am so very proud of her. Thanks, all.

I was sad to read on Monday that Derek Dunn-Rankin passed away.  He was a real gentleman who supported our community like no other.  Those of us in the not-for-profit world asked often and always received advertisements for our fund raisers.  His paper is a partner in our Shop Charlotte campaign to promote local businesses, and has allowed me to write this column every week for years.  But, more importantly, Derek encouraged his staff to be as involved in the community as he was.  You will find Sun employees on local non-profit Boards of Directors, in our Leadership Charlotte alumni book and making a positive difference in our community.  Derek made a tremendous difference and because of his commitment to our community, his legacy will continue.  Thank you, Derek.

Generally, the smaller the company, the broader the responsibility each employee has.  This may allow employees access to financial records, banking data, employee files, and customer records ... and even small businesses have credit card and identity information on thousands of customers.  The employer becomes vulnerable to devastating lawsuits if a dishonest employee compromises those records and information in some way.  Be careful who you hire.  Thorough background checks may help reduce the threat.  For FCRA-compliant employment and tenancy screening services, contact Doris Hebert-Ferrigno at NRG Background Checks.  941-488-8500;  800-531-6522;  nrginfo@atlantic.net.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce recently estimated that employee theft costs American businesses $40 billion annually.  And, because of greater access to employers' resources, an employee is fifteen times more likely to steal from an employer than a non-employee.  Additionally, the annual dollar-value of employee theft is double that of retail theft ... and one-third of all business failures occur due to employee theft.  Thorough background checks may help reduce the threat.  For FCRA-compliant employment and tenancy screening services, contact Doris Hebert-Ferrigno at NRG Background Checks.  941-488-8500;  800-531-6522;  nrginfo@atlantic.net

HOW TO KEEP A HEALTHY LEVEL OF INSANITY AND DRIVE OTHER PEOPLE INSANE

  1. Page yourself over the intercom. Don't disguise your voice.

  1. Find out where your boss shops and buy exactly the same outfits. Always wear them one day after your boss does. This is especially effective if your boss is the opposite gender.

  1. Put mosquito netting around your cubicle.

  1. Every time someone asks you to do something, ask if they want fries with that.

  1. Put your garbage can on your desk and label it "IN."

  1. When driving colleagues around, insist on keeping your car's windshield wipers running during all weather conditions to keep 'em tuned up.

  1. Reply to everything someone says with, "That's what you think."

  1. Highlight irrelevant information in scientific papers, then cc them to your boss.

  1. Finish all your sentences with "in accordance with the prophecy."

  1. At lunchtime, sit in your parked car and point a hair dryer at passing cars to see if they slow down.

  1. Specify that your drive-thru order is "to go."

Workplace violence is a reality.  A study by the Society of Human Resource Management shows that 57% of all businesses have reported violence in their workplaces over a recent four-year period.  Two million workers are victimized annually, with an average jury award of $1 million per incident in the resulting litigation, and a total annual cost to employers of some $36 billion! Thorough background checks may help reduce the threat.  For FCRA-compliant employment and tenancy screening services, contact Doris Hebert-Ferrigno at NRG Background Checks.  941-488-8500;  800-531-6522;  nrginfo@atlantic.net.

Just For Fun

An MIT linguistics professor was lecturing his class the other day. "In English," he said, "a double negative forms a positive. However, in some languages, such as Russian, a double negative remains a negative. But there isn't a single language, not one, in which a double positive can express a negative."

A voice from the back of the room piped up, "Yeah, right."

-------

A couple drove down a country road for several miles, not saying a word. An earlier discussion had led to an argument and neither of them wanted to concede their position. As they passed a barnyard of mules, goats and cows, the husband asked sarcastically, "Relatives of yours?"

"Yep," the wife replied, "in-laws!"

Charlotte Sun Column - March 30, 2016

It may seem a bit early to start outlining the networking events for next month, but if I mention them enough, maybe more of you will attend.  Join us on Apr. 13 for Networking at Noon at Bobcat Trail Golf Club.  As those who attended earlier this month at Sunnybreeze Golf Club said, it’s nice to get off the beaten path and see new venues.  And, those members appreciate the visibility, which keeps them happy and supporting the Chamber.  A win-win.

Our Chambers Night at the Stone Crabs is Mon., Apr. 18.  Members of the Charlotte, Englewood, North Port, Punta Gorda and Venice chambers will be on the deck to mix and mingle and see our Charlotte Stone Crabs in action.  Please visit our website or call the office for ticket information.

We are pleased that Mark Martella, Martella Law Firm, is the program and the sponsor for the Apr. 20 Third Wednesday Coffee.  Mark is an engaging speaker who will discuss “The Five Biggest Mistakes Small Businesses Make That Prevent Success.”  Please join us from 7:15 to 8:30 a.m. at the Event Center in Punta Gorda and pick up some tips that will help your business grow and succeed.

And, writing of Event Centers, the Englewood Event Center on McCall Road is hosting the Apr. 28 Business Card Exchange.  This is a great facility with a stage, bar and food.   They host meetings, wedding, plays and lots of concerts.  Join us from 5 to 7 p.m. with business cards in hand and a small gift to promote your business.

In between all of this, we have a ribbon cutting tonight at 5:30 at the new DiVinci Pizza next to Port Charlotte Town Center; Thurs., Apr. 7, 5:30 p.m. at iHeart Radio, 24100 Tiseo Blvd., Port Charlotte and on Mon., Apr. 18 at noon for Kona Ice of Punta Gorda at Charlotte State Bank & Trust’s Punta Gorda office at 2331 Tamiami Trail. It’s National “Chill-Out Day” so stop by and enjoy a free snow cone.  Also, ChamberACTION meets on Apr. 5, our Junior Leadership Charlotte class will graduate and our Leadership Charlotte class will enjoy Media Day and Justice Day in April.

For more information on any of these events and to learn how your business can get more involved in the Chamber, please call me at 639-2222.

Watch out for tricks on Friday……
