Hiring Myth #3:  "You can't get references anymore!"  You can.  It's just not easy.  And, you have to change the way you get them.  One tool that makes a major difference:  A "reference verification" form, which asks applicants how they think each former employer will rate them in several specific areas, such as dependability, job skills, etc.  You'll be surprised how many times references will confirm or contradict things they wouldn't tell you otherwise!  For FCRA-compliant employment screening, contact Doris Hebert-Ferrigno at NRG Background Checks.  941-488-8500;  800-531-6522;  nrginfo@atlantic.net

Just For Fun

One morning, while shaving, a fellow started cursing and swearing so loudly it attracted the attention of his wife, who was preparing breakfast in the kitchen.

"What's the matter?" she called out.

"My razor -- it won't cut!" he answered.

"Don't be silly, dear!" she declared. "You mean to tell me your beard is tougher than linoleum?"

My high school English teacher was well known for being a fair, but hard, grader. One day I received a B minus on a theme paper. In hopes of bettering my grade and in the spirit of the valentine season, I sent her an extravagant heart shaped box of chocolates with the pre-printed inscription, “BE MINE.”

The following day, I received a return valentine from the teacher. It read, “Thank you, but it’s still a BE MINE-US.”

Hiring Myth #2:  "I can just tell if somebody is lying!".  The truth is ... you can't.  The average person can lie to his or her mother and not get caught.  In this instance, the key to great hiring is not to catch people lying but, rather, to develop application and hiring processes that seek to elicit the truth from applicants  ... supported by a legally-compliant and thorough verification process.  As the man said: "Trust ... but verify!"   For FCRA-compliant employment screening, contact Doris Hebert-Ferrigno at NRG Background Checks.  941-488-8500;  800-531-6522;  nrginfo@atlantic.net

The prospective son-in-law was asked by his girlfriend's father, "Son, can you support a family?"

"Well, no, sir," he replied, caught off-guard by the question. "Your daughter and I were thinking we'd just have to support ourselves, the rest of you will have to fend for yourselves."

A big-city counterfeiter decided the best place to pass off his phony $18 bills would be in some small, out of the way, town. So, he got into his new wheels and off he went.

He found a tiny town with a single store. He entered the store and handed one of the bogus bills to the man behind the counter. "Can you change this for me, please?" he said.

The store clerk looked at the $18 bill a short time, then smiled and told the man, "Sure, Mister. You want 2 nines or 3 sixes?"

Fawcett Memorial Hospital announces it is the first hospital in the region to perform robotic assisted surgery using the newest da Vinci Xi® system which allows for “multi-quadrant” surgeries where the instruments must be able to reach from the pelvis to the chest.  Previous versions of the da Vinci® system require the patient or robot to be re-positioned during surgery.  However, utilizing the da Vinci Xi® robotic system, surgeons now have anatomical access from virtually any position, often eliminating the need for re-positioning.  For more information call (941) 624-4441, visit FawcettHospital.com.

Hiring Myth #1:  "I can just tell if someone will be a good or bad hire!".  If your gut says 'bad hire', trust it.  But, if it says 'good hire', do everything possible to prove yourself wrong.  Studies say we decide whether we like someone or not within 14 seconds.  If you like an applicant, there's every chance you won't ask the hard questions or pursue thorough background checks.  Put gut feelings aside and dig deep.  For FCRA-compliant employment screening, contact Doris Hebert-Ferrigno at NRG Background Checks.  941-488-8500;  800-531-6522;  nrginfo@atlantic.net

Just For Fun:

Our pastor, an avid golfer, was once taking part in a local tournament. As he was preparing to tee off, the organizer of the tournament approached him and pointed to the dark, threatening storm clouds, which were gathering around.

"Preacher," the organizer said, "I trust you'll see to it that the weather won't turn bad on us?"

Our pastor shook his head. "Sorry," he replied. "I'm sales, not management!"

Just For Fun

Country Hospitality

A man was on a long walk in the country. He became thirsty so decided to stop at a little cottage and ask for something to drink. The lady of the house invited him in and served him a bowl of soup by the fire.

There was a baby pig running around the kitchen, running up to the visitor and giving him a great deal of attention. The visitor commented that he had never seen a pig this friendly.

The housewife replied, "Ah, he's not that friendly. That's his bowl you're using."

Just a note of thanks to the “village” who offered advice, encouragement, a hug, a stern glance and more over the years. Kate is graduating from Florida State this weekend!  You know who you are - friends, family, teachers, colleagues.  You picked her up when I was running late and you watched her until I got home.  You spoke with her at Chamber events, Publix, church, the soccer field and when you saw her around town.  Kate tells me I’m “facey” (people know who I am), and by extension, she is, too.  You encouraged her, and me, and we are both grateful.  She is a delightful young woman and I am so very proud of her. Thanks, all.
