Charlotte Sun Column - May 24, 2017

Tomorrow from 5 to 7 p.m., we’ll have the Business Card Exchange at AWA Investment Advisor, 21942 Edgewater Drive, Port Charlotte (former Buelow building).  Bring plenty of business cards and a small gift to promote your business.

The 9th annual Junior Leadership Charlotte Golf Tournament will be held at Kingsway Country Club on June 3.  We are looking for hole sign sponsors, goodie bag donations and prizes for the golfers.  If you’d like to promote your business and support this great program for high school juniors, please contact Ruth at our Port Charlotte office (627-2222, ruzonyi@charlottecountychamber.org).

The Charlotte Stone Crabs and the Chamber are having their first annual  Leadership Charlotte Alumni Day on Thurs., June 8 at 5:00 p.m.  Head to the tiki bar and network with current members and leadership alumni.  Alumni get up to four free tickets (yes, free) to the game and each Alumni will receive one free beer/soda voucher.  Stick around for the 6:35 game against the Florida Fire Frogs.  Please RSVP to Jared Forma jforma@stonecrabsbaseball.com or Julie Mathis jmathis@charlottecountychamber.org for tickets.

Wow, Leadership Charlotte 2017 had a great event on Saturday night.  It was so much fun to see everyone dressed down with boots, hats (LC 2010’s blinked) and diamonds (real and faux).  There were men on horses and mechanical bull riders, line dancers, great music and so much more.  The final tally isn’t in as I write this, but they exceeded their goal and are well on their way to helping the Boys and Girls Cub, Crossroads Hope Academy, Homeless Coalition and the Port Charlotte High Football Team.  Next on their agenda is the final day of the program, Tourism Day, and their June 16 graduation party.  Applications for the class of 2018 are on our website and in both Chamber offices.

Have a fun, safe Memorial Day weekend.

“Good!” I exclaimed. “I’m ready to start a diet too. We can be dieting buddies and help each other out. When I feel the urge to drive out and get a burger and fries, I’ll call you first.”

“Great!” she replied. “I’ll ride with you.”

Just For Fun

A customer walked into our store looking for Christmas lights. I showed her our top brand, but—wanting to make sure each bulb worked—she asked me to take them out of the box and plug them in. I did, and each one lit up.

“Great,” she said. I carefully placed the string of lights back in the box.

But as I handed them to her, she looked alarmed.

“I don’t want this box,” she said abruptly. “It’s been opened.”

Just For Fun

I didn't know if my granddaughter had learned her colors yet, so I decided to test her. I would point out something and ask what color it was. She would tell me, and always she was correct. But it was fun for me, so I continued.

At last, she headed for the door, saying sagely, "Grandma, I think you should try to figure out some of these yourself!"

Rhonda’s dishwasher quit working so she called a repairman. Since she had to go to work the next day, she told the repairman, “I’ll leave the key under the mat. Fix the dishwasher, leave the bill on the counter, and I’ll mail you a check. Oh, by the way don’t worry about my bulldog. He won’t bother you. But, whatever you do, do NOT, under ANY circumstances, talk to my parrot! I REPEAT, DO NOT TALK TO MY PARROT!!!”

When the repairman arrived at Wanda’s apartment the following day, he discovered the biggest, meanest looking bulldog he has ever seen. But, just as she had said, the dog just lay there on the carpet watching the repairman go about his work.

The parrot, however, drove him nuts the whole time with his incessant yelling and name calling. Finally the repairman couldn’t contain himself any longer and yelled, “Shut up, you stupid ugly bird!”

To which the parrot replied, “Get him, Spike!”

I am very fortunate to serve on a number of boards, task forces, committees, etc. where I get to meet and interact with interesting people from all backgrounds and experiences.  I learn a lot from these fellow volunteers.  A few make me crazy (I’m not “know it all” fan), but most are thoughtful and generous with their time and talent.  And, while we don’t always agree on a particular topic or a proposed revision, we listen and come to know other opinions.  I’ve volunteered with John Hitzel and worked with Dick Loftus, two gentle men who had a positive impact on our community.  Thank you for your service to Charlotte County.  You will be missed.

Just For Fun

Two factory workers are talking. The woman says, "I can make the boss give me the day off."

The man replies, "And how would you do that?"

The woman says, "Just wait and see." She then hangs upside down from the ceiling.

The boss comes in and says, "What are you doing?"

The woman replies, "I'm a light bulb."

The boss then says, "You've been working so much that you've gone crazy. I think you need to take the day off."

The man starts to follow her and the boss says, "Where are you going?"

The man says, "I'm going home, too. I can't work in the dark."
